Making Traditional Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are a staple at any Thanksgiving meal. Below is a recipe for the traditional dish that even a beginner cook can make, with a few optional add-ins.

-2 lbs. Idaho potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
-3/4 cup hot milk
-2 Tbsp. butter
-1/2 Tsp. salt
-1/4 Tsp. black pepper

Put potatoes in a pot with enough water to cover them. Cook 13 to 15 minutes or until tender. Drain potatoes.
Put cooked potatoes back in the pot and stir over medium heat, about 1 minute, until any excess water has evaporated.
Mash in milk, butter, salt and pepper. Beat until potatoes are smooth and creamy. Stir in any add-ins.

For a different flavor, try these add-ins:
1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
2 Tbsp. freshly chopped parsley or dill
